From DJ Decks to Sound Engineering
James’s journey in sound began with a pair of Technics vinyl decks, learning to DJ and experimenting with mixing records. This early exposure led him into music production, where he honed his skills in the studio. But it was a defining moment at a festival in Devon that truly set his path. Hearing a live band through a finely tuned line-array system, James was captivated by the precision and quality of the sound; it was so clear that he thought he was listening to pre-recorded music. This experience showed him what was possible with expertly engineered sound, sparking a desire to pursue audio as a career.
Building Experience at Bristol’s Thunderbolt
In the mid-2010s, James secured his first regular position as a sound engineer at the Thunderbolt, a beloved Bristol venue. Here, he refined his skills, learned the nuances of live sound, and built his confidence as an engineer. The Thunderbolt provided a foundation in professional sound engineering that would pave the way for the future of BR Sound.
From Blackrock Recordings to BR Sound
Originally founded as Blackrock Recordings in Portishead, the company focused on recording services. However, as demand for live sound and PA hire grew, so did the company’s scope, ultimately shifting towards live sound engineering and equipment hire. To better reflect its new direction and Bristol roots, the company rebranded as BR Sound, a name that has come to represent high-quality sound and a commitment to the local music and events scene.
